Welcome to the Linux Professional Institute News for September 2003.

This month the President of LPI, Evan Leibovitch, is pleased to tell you 
of some interesting news regarding LPI's participation at the 
'World Summit on the Information Society'.

I have some very interesting, very exciting to share with all of you.

A massive international conference is taking place later this year in 
Geneva. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) brings 
together representatives from every country and thousands of 
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in order to encourage the adoption 
of consistent, sustainable IT policies that protect rights and encourage 
commerce while encouraging high standards and ethics.

This conference is sponsored by the United Nations and the International 
Telecommunications Union. Links to the multiple sites related to this

LPI has recently received accreditation to this conference, one of a 
very small number of approved groups which is explicitly working to 
ensure greater support for free and open source software within the 
conference.

WSIS participation offers a number of opportunities to LPI. It gives us 
a chance to showcase our skills, our programs and our projects under 
development, before a worldwide audience that may not be aware of us. 
Attendees will include governments, groups advocating open source in the 
developing world, and more than 2,000 NGOs of all kinds; many of these 
groups may not yet be aware of LPI. They will know about us at the 
conference.

Also, many of the organizations which LPI may be approaching for funding 
of our ongoing development projects will be in Geneva. We will have the 
opportunity to speak directly to potential sponsors and philanthropic 
organizations on a global level, where they can see first hand our 
efforts to bridge the worldwide technology gap while promoting quality 
education, high standards, and ethics.

LPI is proposing to deliver a combination of workshops, displays and 
exam labs. True to our community form, we intend to work together with 
local Geneva user groups, with whom we are already in contact. It is our 
goal to demonstrate LPI's role as primarily one of action rather than 
pure advocacy.

2; LPI went to China and New York in September..

In September, LPI travelled to China and offered exam labs at 
Universities in;

Dalian Univ. of Technology, Dalian

Shanghai University, Shanghai

Sichuan University - Chengdu

and Tianjin Univ. Tianjin

With some assistance from IBM-China, we were able to create awareness of 
the LPI program in these locations.
LPI offered a total of 600 exams at these exam labs. The students really 
appreciated our efforts to provide exams to them in this way.
These Universities and many others are offering more and more Linux 
classes, and we hope to return one day to help create more awareness.

LPI would like to thank the Professors at these Universities for their 
support and encouragement in this venture.

I would also like to make special mention of my guide and assistant in 
China, YuJia Chen of IBM-China. She helped with all the arrangements, 
helped me find my lost luggage, and translated everything for me.

Some of the LPI staff attended TechX New York this month. The show was 
well attended and Evan Leibovitch, LPI's president, made a presentation 
on Open Source Licencing Models.

Attendees were able to take some Linux training and were encouraged to 
participate in the New York and New Jersey LUGs in the area;

In the month of October LPI will once again attend the Olympia Linux 
Expo and will offer an exam lab for those interested; 11 AM and 2 PM on 
October 8th and 9th . Cost will be 10 UK pounds.

We will offer both exam 101 and 201.

Charles Galpin, one of LPI's staff members will attend the Enterprise 
Linux Forum in Washington D.C. On October 22nd .

We will also attend the IT conference in Toronto, Canada - and offer
certification exams - again we would ask you to register on the LPI
website and come with a registration number to the exam lab which
will be held at 10 am and 2pm on each day of the show.

LPI will also attend the Linux World show in Frankfurt in October and in 
HongKong in November 2003;

4; New Upgrade Program.

We are pleased to offer to any graduates of these programs the 
opportunity to become LPIC-1 by taking only 1 of the Level 1 exams.

Any candidates who have completed the Conectiva or Turbolinux or Sair 
LCA certifications may take 1 of the LPI Level 1 exams to complete the 
LPIC-1.

Please send us proof of your prior certification, and pass one LPI 
Level 1 exam at the Vue or Prometic test site of your choice and you 
will receive your Level 1 certificate.

5; Retake Policy Reminder

This is a reminder for all LPI candidates that our retake policy can be 
found on the LPI website.

It states that if you take the LPI exam and fail, you must wait 1 week 
before you can take it again.

If you fail a second, third, fourth (etc) time – you must wait for 3 
months before you can take the exam again.

If you pass the LPI exam, you can not retake it until the exam has been 
updated and re-released.

Candidates who do not adhere to the policy will have their certification 
denied.
